LIGHTING CABLE INSTALLATION – WELLINGTON AIRPORT
Client: Downer

Location: Wellington Airport (NZ)

Service: Open trenching in installation conduct on airport for new lighting system.

Date: April to October 2025

Challenges:
Downer has been contracted by Wellington Airport to install a new Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS), which uses energy-absorbing blocks to provide an additional safety measure at each end of the runway.
This system will create new runway safety buffer zones to enhance the overall performance of the airport’s safety areas.

The project involves significant installation of new cabling for the upgraded lighting system. Working within an airport environment comes with restricted working hours and extremely strict safety and security protocols, particularly when operating in close proximity to active runways and taxiways.

Solution
Marais Laying NZ has proposed using the ST2 and 400MTC trenching machine for this project.
This machine is capable of achieving a production rate of up to 100 meters per night in solid runway pavement.
By using our trencher, the width of the trench is significantly reduced, which in turn accelerates the backfilling process—crucial, as all trenches must be closed before the first plane takes off at 6 a.m.

Results
This project introduced a trenching solution in an airport environment and demonstrated the capability of the ST2 and 400MTC trenchers in hard ground conditions.
