NX2 MOTORWAY EXTENSION - WARKWORTH

Client: NX2

Location: Warkworth

Service: Ara Tūhono - Pūhoi to Warkworth

Date started: October 2019

Date completed: May 2022

Scope of work

The goal of the Puhoi to Warkworth project is to extend the four-lane Northern Motorway from the Johnstones Hill Tunnels to just north of Warkworth.

Marais was engaged as a subcontractor to carry out the trenching for the installation of both subsoil and ITS fibre.

Challenges

One of the main challenges for this project is trenching through hard and rocky ground.

Other challenges include the weather and programme tightness.

Solutions

Marais proposed using the Tesmec 885 mounted with a Topcon GPS.

The Tesmec 885 CS can cut through hard rock while the Topcon GPS allows for setting and precise recording of the trench location.

To increase productivity on site, Marais also mobilised its ST2 trencher for a few months.
