FIBRE INSTALLATION -
OARO SOUTH PROJECT

Client: Downer

Location: Oaro

Service: Fibre installation

Date started: April 2021

Date completed: July 2021

Scope of work

Changing the damaged and faulty fibre line from Cleverley to Oaro. The work was carried out on the Kiwirail line.

Trenched in the Kiwirail accessway.

IWI, Vodafone, Downer, Spark archaeologists and Kiwirail were the main stakeholders. Installed both underground and overground fibre cable using various techniques like trenching, thrusting and galv- pipe joinning.

Challenges

The two main challenges were working near a live railway as well as in a highly archaeologically sensitive area.

Solutions

Good communications with both the Rail Protection Officer and archaeologist were key to making this project a success.

Because of the area’s sensitivity we could not use one of our trenching machines and had to use traditional excavators instead.

Key fact:
  • 7 km of trenching and thrusting on Kiwirail accessway

  • 1 km of over ground galvanised pipe installation

Key equipment used:
  • 8 ton excavator

  • Thruster
